Dear Madam / Sir,

On 7 July 2017 the United Nations adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. I urge you to sign this landmark agreement in New York on 20 September.

This treaty shows that the majority of the world considers nuclear weapons both illegitimate and illegal. Your signature will contribute to strengthening the norm against the possession and use of nuclear weapons. As with previous weapons prohibitions, changing international norms leads to concrete changes in policies and behaviors, even in states not party to the treaty.

As the International Committee of the Red Cross said, “the historic significance of this treaty cannot be overstated. It is an essential and long-awaited step towards a future free of nuclear weapons.”

The Treaty was adopted by an overwhelming vote of 122-1-1. I urge you to confirm your government’s support for the Treaty by participating at the signing ceremony on the 20th of September during the High-Level segment of the United Nations General Assembly.

I wish you the best of luck in the work to prohibit nuclear weapons. Be assured that people from all over the world will stand with you in this most important and urgent endeavor.

Yours sincerely,
